Intent
At Stockwell, we believe Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in developing children’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. PE helps children build a strong foundation for lifelong health by encouraging physical fitness, improving coordination, and fostering healthy habits. It also teaches essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and communication, helping students grow into confident, active individuals.
Our PE curriculum is designed to provide a balanced and progressive framework that will ensure our children build on their skills year after year. By offering a variety of physical activities—such as team sports, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and swimming—children will be exposed to different movement patterns, strategies, and techniques. These experiences will not only enhance their physical health but also their self-esteem, emotional resilience, and ability to work collaboratively with peers.
We ensure progression by:
· Continuously assessing and reviewing individual progress
· Ensuring age-appropriate challenges and activities
· Using differentiated teaching methods to cater to all learning styles and abilities
By the end of Year 6, students will have developed both a broad range of skills and a deep understanding of the importance of physical activity in their lives, with the confidence to continue participating in physical activity throughout their lives.
Our PE curriculum is designed to support a child's overall development by promoting physical activity, mental health, and social well-being. It encourages children to explore new talents, be active, and build a lifelong love for fitness, regardless of their starting point.
In EYFS and Key Stage 1, we focus on fundamental movement skills like running, jumping, and catching, laying the groundwork for more complex skills to be taught in Key Stage 2. Children engage in individual, small-group, and team activities to develop both independently and cooperatively.
Our curriculum is inclusive, reflecting the nature of our school. We recognize each child's unique starting point in physical development and ensure all are supported to reach their full potential. It also encourages activities that meet the diverse needs and interests of our community.
We emphasize health and well-being by connecting PE to wider school initiatives on healthy lifestyles and mental health. We aim to inspire children to view physical activity as a lifelong habit, working with local clubs to expose them to various activities and role models.
