Welcome to EYFS at Stockwell Primary School
We offer a rich, exciting and ambitious Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, designed around children’s interests, needs and stages of development. Our aim is to help every child build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for a successful transition into Year 1 and beyond
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum follows the seven areas of learning in the EYFS Statutory Framework. All areas are interconnected and equally important.

Through a balance of adult-led teaching and child-led exploration, children enjoy meaningful experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, independence and a love of learning.
Learning Through Play and Relationships
We carefully plan and sequence our curriculum so that children build on their knowledge and skills throughout the year. Our learning is enriched through trips, special experiences and opportunities to learn with families.
We place children’s well-being at the heart of our practice. During the first weeks of school, we focus on building positive relationships, establishing routines and getting to know each child’s interests, strengths and needs. Children learn best when they feel safe, happy and valued.
Communication and Language is a focus in our EYFS at Stockwell. Through quality interactions, stories, discussions and language-rich experiences, we help children develop their vocabulary, listening skills and confidence to communicate.
We also support the development of executive function—the ability to focus, remember instructions and manage feelings and behaviour—through playful, purposeful activities.
Reading, Writing and Mathematics
Early reading is a priority. We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, a validated Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programme, to give every child the foundations for reading and writing.
Children develop their writing skills through phonics, stories, rhymes, non-fiction texts and purposeful writing opportunities. Fine-motor activities, including Squiggle While You Wriggle and Dough Disco, help children build the strength and control needed for writing.
In mathematics, we use Mastering Number to develop secure foundations in number and shape, space and measure. Our progressive curriculum prepares children for the mathematical learning they will encounter in Year 1.

Our Wider Curriculum
Children develop their knowledge and understanding of the world through carefully planned teaching, exploration, creative experiences and discussions. We follow the principles of Development Matters, ensuring our curriculum supports children’s holistic development.
