Art
Intent
Art is a unique way of allowing children to express themselves creatively and independently. Art helps children build critical thinking and judgement of other peoples work, but also their own through self-reflection, which helps build empathy and understanding of other people’s thoughts and feelings and understanding of the world around them. At our school we aim to provide a safe space where children have the confidence to express their thoughts and feelings through our carefully chosen units, linked to wonderful topics which lend themselves to artistic expression and freedom.
At Stockwell our curriculum allows children to experience many art forms, including but not exclusively; drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. Throughout their time at Stockwell, children will experiment, practise and master techniques using their individual sketchbooks which we proudly used like journals to document their progress and individualism. Their exposure to new vocabulary lays a central role in our lessons, allowing children the confidence to speak about Art in a wider setting confidently and with pride.
Our aim is to build confident children who have a deep insight into culture and history through the lens of art in the world, in it’s varying forms. Our curriculum covers artists that demonstrate and represent a diversity within both our school and our wide community in Hull, which we proudly take inspiration from.
Stockwell Approach to Teaching
Our Art Curriculum is aimed at inclusivity and accessibility to all children. We have a clear progression of skills through the whole school that covers the ranges of skills needed for children to progress in both skills and knowledge of art.
Through Art and Design children will:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of art forms.
We are very proud of our art curriculum. Please see our Long Term Plan to see all of the exciting topics we are covering this year.
